Our CWP Terminology
"A straightforward collection of key terms we use daily on the factory floor, explained simply."
Product Family & Naming System
Product Platform | Product Type | Official English Name | Official Chinese Name |
---|---|---|---|
Nestable Platform | Standard | Nine-Legged Nestable Pallet | 九脚可套叠托盘 |
Racking | Three-Runner Skid Pallet | (川字底)三滑道板托盘 | |
Stacking | Picture Frame Pallet | 田字底托盘 | |
Non-Nestable Platform | Flat Top | Flat Top Nine-Block Pallet | 平面九方块托盘 |
Note: We classify 川字底 as Skid Pallet and 田字底 as Picture Frame Pallet. These English terms are more professional and recognizable in the B2B industry than direct translations.
I. Core Terminology
Compressed Wood Pallet (CWP)
Also known as a Presswood Pallet or Engineered Molded Wood Pallet. It is an engineered wood product manufactured by mixing wood processing by-products (such as wood chips and shavings) with a synthetic resin and molding them under high temperature and high pressure in a single process. Its core features are its nail-free, one-piece construction, nestability, and inherent compliance with the ISPM 15 export standard.
Traditional Wood Pallet
Refers to a pallet constructed from natural sawn lumber (such as pine or oak) for its deck boards and stringers/blocks, assembled using nails or bolts. It has long been the standard unit load device in the logistics industry, characterized primarily by its durability and repairability.
Unit Load Device
A device used in logistics to consolidate multiple items into a single standard unit for handling, storage, and transportation. The pallet is the most fundamental and common form of a unit load device.
II. Manufacturing & Materials
Engineered Wood Product
A composite material product manufactured by bonding or fixing together strands, particles, fibers, or veneers of wood. A compressed wood pallet is a typical engineered wood product, with its performance characteristics designed and controlled.
High-Temperature, High-Pressure Molding
The core manufacturing process for CWP. A mixture of resin and wood fibers is thermo-pressed in a mold at temperatures up to 150°C and pressures of 85 kg/cm², forming it into a single piece. This process imparts all of CWP's key characteristics.
One-Piece Construction
Refers to a pallet that is a seamless, single unit, without any separate components joined by nails or bolts. This design fundamentally eliminates the safety hazards and product damage risks associated with nails, splinters, and loose components.
III. Performance & Operations
Nestability
The ability of empty pallets to fit into one another, thereby significantly reducing storage space. This is one of CWP's most significant operational advantages, made possible by its unique tapered legs, achieving nesting ratios as high as 5:1.
Load Capacity
The maximum weight a pallet can safely support. It is typically categorized as:
Dynamic Load Capacity: The maximum weight a pallet can bear while being moved by equipment like a forklift.
Static Load Capacity: The maximum weight a pallet can bear when at rest on a flat surface.
Racking/Edgewise Load Capacity: The maximum weight a pallet can bear when supported only by its edges on a rack's beams.
Closed-Loop System
A logistics model where pallets are continuously circulated between a shipper and a receiver, and are returned to the shipper for inspection, repair, and reuse. The repairability of traditional wood pallets makes them ideal for this system.
Open-Loop System / One-Way Shipping
A logistics model where the pallet is shipped with the goods to the final destination and is not returned to the shipper. Due to their low cost and export convenience, compressed wood pallets are the ideal choice for such applications, especially in international shipping.
IV. Regulation & Compliance
ISPM 15 (International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15)
An international standard developed by the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) to prevent the international spread of forest pests and diseases through solid wood packaging materials. It requires that solid wood packaging thicker than 6 mm be heat-treated or fumigated.
Processed Wood
As defined by ISPM 15, engineered wood products such as plywood and particleboard, produced using glue, heat, pressure, or a combination thereof. These materials are considered to pose no risk of pest transmission.
Exempt
Due to its manufacturing process, the compressed wood pallet is classified as "processed wood" and is therefore completely exempt from the treatment and marking requirements of ISPM 15. This is a core advantage of CWP in export operations.
V. Economics & Finance
Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
A financial analysis method used to assess all direct and indirect costs of an asset over its entire lifecycle. For pallets, TCO includes not only the purchase price but also costs related to shipping, storage, repair, disposal, product damage, and other operational expenses.
Return on Investment (ROI)
A financial metric used to measure the profitability of an investment. It is calculated as: ROI = (Annual Net Savings / Initial Investment Cost) x 100%. It is used to evaluate the financial benefits of switching from traditional wood pallets to CWP.
VI. Sustainability
Circular Economy
An economic model that aims to minimize resource consumption and waste generation by designing materials, products, and assets to maintain their highest value for as long as possible. The use of recycled materials in CWP is an embodiment of the circular economy.
Carbon Footprint
The total amount of greenhouse gases emitted directly or indirectly by an entity (individual, organization, product, etc.). The lightweight nature of CWP helps reduce the carbon footprint in the transportation phase.
